App updates — Paloma POS 2

This article is about Paloma POS 2 — the new Paloma register-app for a tablet, POS terminal, or Windows device. It explains how the register updates: quick over-the-air fixes between releases, full versions from the device store, and updating on Windows — how to check and apply an update, and what to do if one won't install. If you're not sure which product you have, start with «How to tell you have Paloma POS 2».

Overview

Paloma POS 2 updates in two independent ways:

  • Over-the-air patches — small fixes between full versions. The register downloads them itself and applies them the next time the app restarts. You don't install anything from a store.
  • Full versions from a store — larger updates arrive as a new app version: Google Play, App Store, the built-in Sunmi store, Valor, or PAX. On a Windows device the full version installs from an installer package provided by Paloma support.

Updates don't touch your data: orders, shifts, and settings stay in place. To check your current version, open the register's side drawer — the app version is shown at the bottom, plus the patch number when a patch is installed (for example «2.0.1+16 · patch 5»).

Over-the-air patches

Patch controls live in the register's settings: «App update» (subtitle «Over-the-air patches, channel, manual check»). At the top is the explainer: «This device receives over-the-air code patches. Choose which channel it follows, or check for a patch now. A downloaded patch takes effect the next time the app restarts.»

What the section shows and configures:

  • «Installed patch» — the patch in effect now: «Base release (no patch)» or «Patch N».
  • «Automatic updates» — an «On» / «Off» switch. When on, the register checks and downloads patches in the background; when off, only manually.
  • «Update channel» — which patch stream to follow: «Stable», «Beta», or «Developer». For a live location keep «Stable» unless support asked otherwise.

Check and apply manually

  1. Open the register settings → «App update».
  2. Tap the «Check for update» row. While it runs, the register shows «Checking…».
  3. Read the result in the line under the button:
    • «You're on the latest patch» — nothing to update, you're current.
    • «Patch installed — restart to apply» — the patch downloaded; close and reopen the app to make it take effect.
  4. When a patch is downloaded, the register also shows a «Restart required» banner with the note «A new patch was downloaded. Close and reopen the app to apply it.» How to restart on each platform is covered in the section below.

To check a different patch stream, use «Check a different channel» next to the button — this is a one-off check that does not change your main channel.

Restarting to apply an update

A downloaded patch takes effect only after the app restarts. Until then, the status line in the update section shows «Patch installed — restart to apply», and the «Restart required» banner stays on screen. How to restart depends on the platform:

  • Android. The banner has a «Restart and apply» button — tap it and the app restarts itself. Important: swiping the register away from the Recents list does not restart the app — the register's process survives the swipe, so the patch won't apply. Use the button on the banner.
  • Windows and iPad/iPhone. There is no restart button here — fully close the app and open it again, and the patch applies itself.

The «Later» button simply hides the banner: the patch applies on the app's next restart, whenever that suits you.

Full versions from a store and on Windows

Large updates arrive as a new app version and install the device's normal way:

  • Android tablet or phone — update Paloma POS 2 in Google Play.
  • iPad or iPhone — update from the App Store.
  • Sunmi POS terminal — update from the built-in Sunmi app store.
  • Valor terminal — update from the Valor device's app store.
  • PAX terminal — update from the PAX app store (marketplace).
  • Windows device — install the new installer package provided by Paloma support.

A full version is needed when an over-the-air patch isn't enough: the base part of the app is updated. If the register asks you to update (see «Update required» below), update through the store or installer package — a patch won't help there.

The first launch after installing is covered in «Install and first launch».

Common problems

  • "Здесь не удалось сменить канал" / "Это устройство не может сменить канал автоматически" — switching the update channel is not available on this device; reinstall manually.
  • «Updates are not available on this build» (with the hint «Over-the-air patches run only on a released build. Debug and development builds are never patched.») — over-the-air patches work only on the normal live build. On such a build, update through the device store.
  • «Update check failed — try again later» — the register couldn't reach the update service. Check the internet and retry later.
  • «Patch installed — restart to apply» — a patch is already downloaded but not yet applied. Close and reopen the app (or tap «Restart and apply» on the «Restart required» banner).
  • «In-app restart isn't available on this build. Close and reopen the app to apply the update.» — the restart button isn't available; just fully close and reopen the app and the patch applies itself.
  • «You're on the latest patch» while you're waiting for an update on another channel, and a «This channel needs a reinstall to switch» card appears — switching to that channel needs a one-time reinstall. Tap «Reinstall «channel»» and confirm «Reinstall & restart»; orders, shifts, and settings are untouched. If «Reinstall not available here» appears, reinstall the app from its installer/store.
  • «Update required» (with a note that the device's data was created by a newer app version) — an outdated base version is installed. Update the app from the device store, or from the installer package on Windows, and sign in again. Your data stays safe and unchanged.

FAQ

Do I need to do anything for the register to update?

Usually no. With «Automatic updates» on, the register downloads over-the-air patches itself and offers a restart. Larger versions come through the device store — you install those like any other app update.

How do I see the current version?

Open the register's side drawer — the app version is at the bottom, with the patch number next to it when a patch is installed (for example «2.0.1+16 · patch 5»). The same version is shown in settings, under the About section.

How is a patch different from a store update?

An over-the-air patch is a small fix between releases: the register downloads it itself and applies it on the next restart, no store needed. A store update (or the Windows installer package) is a full new version of the app; it's needed for larger changes and when the register shows «Update required».

Will an update erase orders and settings?

No. Neither an over-the-air patch nor a store update touches your orders, shifts, or settings — they stay on the device and sync as usual.

The patch downloaded but nothing changed.

A patch takes effect only after a restart. Fully close and reopen the app — or tap «Restart and apply» on the «Restart required» banner. If the line still shows «Patch installed — restart to apply», the restart hasn't happened yet.

Which update channel should I choose?

For a live location — «Stable». The «Beta» and «Developer» channels are for early testing and are enabled only at Paloma support's request.
