Customer display — Paloma POS 2
This article is about Paloma POS 2 — the new app-based register in the Paloma line. The customer display (the second, customer-facing screen) shows the order contents, totals, the tip and signature prompts, and — while idle — an attract slideshow or ad. This page explains how to turn on the second screen, pick a template and brightness, show a product photo on add, run an attract slideshow, use the split layout, and connect a separate tablet as a customer display over the local network.
Overview
You can get a customer display in two ways:
- A second screen attached to the cashier device — a monitor or customer display the system sees as a separate screen. The register shows the order on it when the screen is connected and running in Extend (not Duplicate) mode.
- A separate device on the local network — a second tablet on the same network, paired to a cashier. It boots straight to the customer display and mirrors the cashier's order.
All customer-display settings live in «Settings» → «Devices», under the "second screen" category. Appearance settings apply instantly and only on that device — they are not carried over to other registers.
Turning on the second screen on the cashier
- Connect a second screen to the cashier device and set it to Extend desktop mode (not Duplicate).
- Open «Settings» → «Devices» and turn on the «Customer display» row.
- When the screen is found and running, the status «Active on the second screen.» appears below the row.
- If there is no screen, the status reads: «Second screen not detected — connect one and set the display to Extend mode (not Duplicate).» Check the cable and the system display settings.
The «Check displays» button opens the «Displays detected by the system» diagnostic dialog. It shows which screens the system sees, whether the customer display is turned on, the current state of the second screen (for example «Bridge state: shown on a second screen» or «Bridge state: hidden (no second screen mounted)»), and the «Last attempt error: …» line — what prevented the screen from showing last time. If the system sees no screens at all, the dialog reads «The system reports no displays.». When contacting support, pass these details along — they show exactly where the chain breaks.
Choosing a template
The «Customer display template» row sets the look of the second screen. Available templates:
- «Classic» — the standard layout, totals in the bottom panel.
- «Spotlight» — accent header band and an enlarged, centered total.
- «Last item spotlight» — shows the item just added in a large card above the cart.
- «Photo backdrop» — plays your idle-media photos behind a translucent order card.
- «Split — order larger» — the order card in the wider column, photos beside it.
- «Split — photo larger» — photos in the wider column, the order card beside them.
Separately, the «Customer display receipt style» row sets how the receipt itself looks on the second screen: «Classic», «Minimal», «Dark premium», «Brand bar», «Ticket», «Big total», «Glass», «Colour header/footer», «Chalkboard», «Kraft paper», «Logo stamp», «Paper tape», «Boutique», «Neon».
Brightness and product photo
- «Customer display brightness» — light or dark on the second screen: «Match POS», «Always dark», or «Always light». The choice applies instantly and only on this device.
- «Product photo on add» — when on, adding an item to the order shows its photo on the second screen. This device only.
Split layout
The «Split — order larger» and «Split — photo larger» templates divide the screen into two columns: the order card and a column of images. By default the column shows images from the attract slideshow.
To give the column its own images, open «Customer display split media» and tap «Add images». Use portrait (vertical) images — they fit the narrow column best. The split column reuses the same show toggle and slideshow speed as the customer-screen media.
Attract slideshow while idle
When no order is active, the second screen can play a slideshow of images — an ad or attract screen.
- Open «Attract media» in the devices section.
- Turn on «Show on customer display» — the images play on the second screen when no order is active.
- Tap «Add images» and upload your pictures. They are stored on this device only.
- Set «Seconds per image» — how long each slide is held.
The same images can be enabled on the kiosk screen and the «Order Ready» board with separate toggles on the same settings screen.
A separate device over the network
You can turn a second tablet into a customer display for a cashier over the local network.
On the cashier, turn on «Serve customer display over LAN» — the register begins serving its customer screen to a paired display device on the same network. Its address for the display appears alongside.
On the display device:
- In the devices section, open «Paired cashier» («Not paired» by default).
- Enter the «Cashier IP address» and «Port» shown on the cashier, then tap «Pair».
- To break the link, use «Unpair».
To make the device work only as a customer display, turn on the «Customer display device» role. A confirmation appears — «Turn this device into a customer display?» — tap «Continue». The device then boots straight to the customer display and blocks every other screen; it mirrors the paired cashier's order.
While connecting, the device shows «Connecting to the cashier…», and if the cashier has not sent an order yet — «Waiting for the cashier…».
For network administrators. The customer screen is served over the local network on a dedicated port, 36511. If the display device cannot connect, check that both devices are on the same local network and that port 36511 on the cashier is not taken by another program or blocked by a firewall. A serving failure never interferes with the register: even if the port is busy or the display is unreachable, the cashier keeps taking orders and payments as usual.
For device roles in general (cashier, board, kiosk, customer display), see «How to tell you have Paloma POS 2».
Common problems
- "Не удалось получить информацию об экранах." — the self-check could not query the displays; check that the second screen is connected.
- «Second screen not detected — connect one and set the display to Extend mode (not Duplicate).» — the system does not see the second screen or it runs in Duplicate mode. Check the cable and set the system display settings to Extend desktop, not mirroring.
- «Not supported on this device.» — a second screen is not available on this device. Use a separate device over the network, or a device that supports a second screen.
- «Connecting to the cashier…» stays for a long time — the display device cannot reach the cashier. Check that both devices are on the same network, that «Serve customer display over LAN» is on at the cashier, and that the IP address and port are entered correctly.
- «Waiting for the cashier…» — the link is up, but there is no active order at the cashier yet. Start an order on the cashier and it will appear on the display.
- The second screen is on but blank while idle — turn on «Show on customer display» in «Attract media» and add images.
- Appearance settings did not appear on another register — this is expected: the template, brightness, receipt style, and media are set only for the device where you changed them.
FAQ
Do I need a separate tablet to show the order to the customer?
No. If you can attach a second monitor or customer display to the cashier, turn on «Customer display» and the register shows the order on it. A separate device over the network is needed only when a second screen cannot be attached to the cashier itself.
Why didn't my customer-display settings carry over to another register?
The template, brightness, receipt style, product photo, and uploaded images are stored only on the device where you set them. Configure them separately on each register.
What does the second screen show when there is no order?
If «Attract media» is enabled with «Show on customer display», it plays a slideshow of your images. Otherwise the screen shows a welcome message while it waits for an order.
How is "split" different from a normal template?
In the «Split — order larger» and «Split — photo larger» templates the screen is divided into two columns: the order and images. You can upload separate portrait images for the column in «Customer display split media»; if there are none, it shows images from the attract slideshow.
