Kitchen — Paloma POS 2
This article is about Paloma POS 2, the new app-based register in the Paloma line. It explains how an order reaches the kitchen: sending items from the register, the «Kitchen Display» (KDS) with its cooking statuses, the customer-facing «Order Ready» board, and the kitchen print modes. If you are not sure which product you have, start with «How to tell you have Paloma POS 2».
Overview
- Send to kitchen. Items go to the kitchen when the server taps «Send» (or the merged «Save and send» button) on the order screen. See «Table orders» for how to open a table and add items.
- Kitchen Display (KDS). The «Kitchen Display» screen shows sent orders as tiles, split into two tabs — «In Progress» and «Done». A cook advances each item's status by tapping it.
- Cooking statuses. Every item moves through «NEW» → «COOKING» → «READY» → «DONE».
- Order Ready board. A separate customer screen, «Order Ready», shows order numbers in two sections — «In Progress» and «Ready» — reading the statuses straight from the Kitchen Display.
- Kitchen print modes. For each order type you set when the kitchen ticket prints: «Before payment», «After payment», or «Don't print».
The Kitchen Display and the board are connected through the register: the register sends items → the cook marks progress on the display → the board immediately shows the customer which order is cooking and which is ready. Devices on the same local network see each other's changes.
Before you start, sign in with your PIN and open a shift — see «PIN sign-in and shift».
How an order reaches the kitchen
Step 1. Send items from the register
- Open a table or order and add items (see «Table orders»).
- Tap «Send» to send the new items to the kitchen. If the merged button is enabled, tap «Save and send».
- Only new, not-yet-sent items go to the kitchen. Previously sent lines are not printed again and are not duplicated on the display.
The «Save» button only saves a draft — it does not go to the kitchen until you tap «Send».
Step 2. The order appears on the Kitchen Display
Open «Kitchen Display» (a side-menu shortcut, if it is enabled — see below):
- The sent order appears as a tile on the «In Progress» tab.
- The tile shows the order number, its type («Dine-in», «Quick order», «To-Go» and others), the items, and a waiting timer.
- The sort button switches the order: «Newest first» or «Oldest first».
Step 3. Mark progress by tapping
- Tapping an item moves it to the next status: «NEW» → «COOKING» → «READY» → «DONE».
- Buttons on the order tile act on all items at once: «Cooking all», «All ready», «All done».
- When every item is done, the order moves to the «Done» tab.
- The «Recall» button returns an order from the «Done» tab back to «In Progress» if it was marked by mistake.
Step 4. The customer sees the order on the Order Ready board
The «Order Ready» screen is a customer-facing pickup board. It shows order numbers in two sections:
- «In Progress» — while at least one item is still «NEW» or «COOKING».
- «Ready» — once every item reaches «READY»: the order can be handed out.
The board only displays statuses — nothing can be created or changed on it. As soon as the cook changes a status on the Kitchen Display, the order number moves from «In Progress» to «Ready». If a customer is attached to the order, their name shows next to the number. Kiosk orders carry a «Kiosk» badge.
Show the kitchen and board shortcuts in the menu
By default the Kitchen Display and board shortcuts are hidden. Enable them on the device you need:
- Open «Settings» → «Devices».
- Turn on «Kitchen Display available» — a «Kitchen Display» shortcut appears in the side menu.
- Turn on «Order Ready available» — an «Order Ready» shortcut appears.
These toggles apply only to this device and do not put it into board mode. To dedicate a spare tablet to the customer board, use the «Order Ready board» mode.
Kitchen print modes
Besides the KDS screen, the kitchen can receive a paper kitchen ticket. Set when it prints for each order type:
- Open «Settings» → «Devices» → print center → «Kitchen printing».
- For each row — «Tables», «To-Go», «Quick Order» — pick a mode:
- «Before payment» — the kitchen ticket prints when items are sent to the kitchen.
- «After payment» — the kitchen ticket prints only after payment is recorded.
- «Don't print» — the kitchen ticket does not print automatically.
- The setting is saved on this device.
Where the kitchen ticket actually goes is decided by the kitchen printers and their item routing — see «Printers and printing».
Order waiting time
The Kitchen Display and the «Order Ready» board do not keep old orders forever. The waiting window is configurable: «Settings» → shift operations → «Order waiting time». Orders older than the chosen window stop showing on the screens, so yesterday's checks don't clutter the board.
Common problems
- «Couldn't load the order board. Please try again.» — the «Order Ready» board could not fetch data. Retry; if it persists, check the connection and sync.
- The order didn't appear on the Kitchen Display — the items were not sent. Return to the order screen and tap «Send» (or «Save and send»). The «Save» button only saves a draft and does not send it to the kitchen.
- The kitchen ticket doesn't print — that order type is set to «Don't print», or the ticket is set to print «After payment» and the order is not paid yet. Check the «Kitchen printing» section.
- An item doesn't reach the kitchen even though the order was sent — the item may be on the stop list. Check «Stop list».
- There is no Kitchen Display shortcut in the menu — it is off on this device. Turn on «Kitchen Display available» in «Settings» → «Devices».
- Old orders don't clear from the board — the «Order waiting time» in shift operations changed. Check the selected window.
- A neighboring tablet's order isn't on the board — the devices must be on the same local network and syncing. Wait for sync or check the connection.
FAQ
What's the difference between «Send» and «Save»?
«Send» sends new items to the kitchen — they appear on the Kitchen Display and (per your setting) print a kitchen ticket. «Save» only saves the order draft; it does not go to the kitchen. If one action is more convenient, enable the merged «Save and send» button — see «Table orders».
How are the register, the Kitchen Display, and the board connected?
The register sends items to the kitchen. The Kitchen Display shows them as tiles, and the cook taps to advance the status «NEW» → «COOKING» → «READY» → «DONE». The «Order Ready» board reads those statuses and shows the customer order numbers in the «In Progress» and «Ready» sections. Everything is linked through one order and shared sync.
Do I need separate devices for the kitchen and the board?
Not necessarily, but it helps. The Kitchen Display and the «Order Ready» board can be opened on any device through the menu shortcuts. For a permanent customer board, dedicate a spare tablet in «Order Ready board» mode.
What does the customer see on the Order Ready board?
Only order numbers in two sections: «In Progress» and «Ready» (plus the customer name if one is attached, and a «Kiosk» badge for kiosk orders). Amounts, items, and any actions are unavailable — it is a view-only screen.
Do I have to print a kitchen ticket if I use the Kitchen Display?
No. If the kitchen works off the screen, set the relevant order types to «Don't print» in the «Kitchen printing» section. The display will show orders without paper tickets.
Why is an order «stuck» in the In Progress section?
While at least one item is «NEW» or «COOKING», the order stays in «In Progress». Bring every item to «READY» on the Kitchen Display and the order moves to the «Ready» section.
